with Bill McCleskey

It's Saturday! Are you working? Get Off your Assets and make the dream you so clearly detailed on your vision board a reality. Don't be distracted by the fact that most people take a chill pill during the weekend.

Just because it’s the weekend doesn’t mean your dream is on hold. Your goals don’t care that you’re tired or have a gala to attend. The world is waiting for you to push through perceived limitations and prevail. Let’s get it!

The Grind Includes Friday is just a mindset, not a focus on one day of the week to grind. The Grind includes Saturday too.. and every other day of the week.

If your goals don't wake you up early and have you staying up late working even though you may be exhausted, I would argue they are impotent goals. Set an objective that uncovers your passion has you obsessed with performing extraordinary and rising to the top.

I'm signing off as Bill McCleskey before I hit the gym this morning. It's leg day. Am I excited? Barely. Will I get it done? Most definitely!

More than ever people want to leave their jobs and become entrepreneurs, especially sales people. And it makes sense. If you’re a great sales professional, why not do the work for yourself and get paid more money? This is exactly what I did. Working for Comcast Business in Nashville as a Business Account Executive (BAE) for 13 months was enough for me to realize that I NEEDED to be an entrepreneur.  Within 10 months, I doubled my income. Within 2 years, My company – MitechUSA.com - was featured in multiple publications. Within 4½ years, Mitech was featured in the Nashville Business Journal as one of the largest minority firms in Nashville, Tennessee according to gross revenue. We now have nearly 300 Sales affiliates throughout the US and over 1200 clients like Holiday Inn Express, Quality Inn, Zaxby’s and Farmers Bank & Trust. Now that’s a story we all love to hear.

But the success of my launch didn’t just happen in those 10 months. It started when I launched my first company as a freshman in college. I had some lessons to learn that had nothing to do with how to office space or financial statements. As a freshman, I started the journey to build the necessary characteristics within to become an extraordinary entrepreneur. Although I didn’t know that’s what I was doing, navigating the maze of entrepreneurship molded certain qualities in me that helped me rise to the top. The journey to become who I am today started 1000 steps ago.

Every week, someone sends me an email, text message or calls asking for advice on how I left my job and became a full-time entrepreneur. Their questions mainly pertain to how to set up a company with the State of Tennessee, or where they can find cheap office space. But inevitably, I steer the conversation to why they’re starting a business or want to go full time as an entrepreneur. You see, setting up a business with the State is easy. Moving forward on a business idea when potential clients or vendors tell you no is the hard part. The innate qualities we nurture as individuals are sometimes the only assets we have to get us through tough times when we’re building an idea.

When you’re knocked down 7 times, what makes you want to get back up the 8th time? Are you able to turn off all distractions and maintain an intense focus on your work despite what’s going on around you? Can you push yourself passed your perceived limitations? Are you willing to wake up 3 hours earlier each morning? Can you even operate on 3 hours of sleep?

The question is not can you, but will you? And does your true purpose drive you to do so every single day?

Entrepreneurship is not about your product or service. It’s about you becoming a different person. A better person. The best version of yourself. If you are willing to grow through the pain, you might have a shot. If you are willing to grind when you’re tired, there’s hope for you as a business owner. But if you cool with being average, entrepreneurship is not the game you want to play. Keep your job and excel there.

This entrepreneur journey is not for the faint at heart. It will chew you up and spit you out without even thinking. Your will inside is the only thing that will determine your path.

Sure you can find mentors, raise money and form strategic partnerships, but unless you have 100% resolve to win, I recommend keeping your job.

This book is for those kindred spirits who have reached out to me repeatedly asking for advice or anyone who wants to leave their day job to become a full-time entrepreneur. My message is simple. Harness, nurture and develop your internal assets first before you make the leap. Otherwise you’ll get eaten alive!

It ain't easy! w/ Bill McCleskey

If you thought achieving your dreams would be easy, you’re still living in a fantasy world. This is not kindergarten. You’re grown now. Let me give it to you straight. There are no handouts in life. The price for success must be paid up front and in full. You cannot put success on a credit card. It demands cash everyday. This is not Walmart and there is no layaway plan. This is not Burger King where you can have it your way. This is a journey which requires grit, hustle and consistent pivot. Deal with it.

Be so good they cant ignore you...jpg

Commitment is required to achieve any massive goal. And most people will never commit to anything. We live in a society where our commitment muscles are super flabby. New Year’s resolutions become a few weeks of going after it. Half of all marriages become a joke. And setting goals that require discipline have turned into fun vision board parties. I’m here to tell you after the vision board party comes the journey of 1000 steps. After the wedding, there’s a marriage. And after the Ball drops on December 31st, there’s a new year waiting for your grind. Make the decision now to become ultra committed to your goals. Decide up front that no distractions will get you off track. Reflect on your past mistakes and deviations. Determine how you will avoid those traps and set a plan to progress like never before.

Commitment is doing what you said you would do, long after the mood in which you said it in has left you.

A vision party is fun. You’re excited to cut out pictures of your dreams and goals. You want a six pack and you know how it would make you feel if you achieved that level of health and vitality. But 3 weeks later, when it’s raining and cold outside, going to the gym can easily be put off. It’s easy to negotiate with yourself about why you’ve been consistent and to give yourself some slack.

Be Do Have.jpg

But I’m enticing you to become obsessed. Yes, obsessed. If you really are committed, this is not a game! Become a different person and step up your commitment to yourself. Successful people and the unsuccessful have something in common. They both don’t always feel like doing the things it takes to become great. But those who attain success find a way to get themselves to take action anyway. Get yourself to take action despite your feelings. Your goals don’t care about what you’re feeling emotionally. Make it happen anyway.

I am always surprised at the grand results from something to which I am 100% committed. But then again I’m not surprised simply because I know the principle. Commitment is the gateway to maximum achievement. Discipline pays Dividends. Building your discipline muscle will absolutely change your life. I work on this daily by doing simple things like eliminating meat from my diet for a month, drinking water only for a week or not watching the news. The stronger my discipline and commitment muscle, the more success I know I can attract.

Take away: Don’t be like most people who float through life in reaction mode. Commit to design your life and make no excuses about staying the course. Develop the philosophy that you either win or you learn. There are no failures. Move forward with confidence and gusto. The world needs your example.

Where are you on the discipline and commitment scale? Are you getting yourself to take action daily on your goals? Have you put yourself in an environment conducive for success? Challenge yourself to become more. Your only competition is you. Become a better you everyday and you’ll be amazed at what you accomplish within a short period of time.

“We’re going to suspend you with pay pending an investigation..” were the words I heard come from my Sales Director’s mouth. He looked me right in the eye with a sense of disappointment. I really liked Brian who had been my previous manager. Since he had been promoted to Director, I didn’t have too much communication with him on the daily but I realized he was definitely a company guy. He followed directions very well. And my track record for following directions was not so good. In fact, it was horrible. Of course this didn’t start at the Fortune 25 Company where I was making 100k+ working barely 30 hours per week with every perk in the book. It started long ago in school when teachers told me I was troublesome and needed to learn to fall in line. I fell in line alright. But on my own line, in my own lane, on my own time, at my own pace.

The suspension with pay was a joke to me. I couldn’t initially understand why a company would suspend an employee and still pay them. Of course considering the legal ramifications, later on I did understand. But at the time, this was simple. The corporate giant found out that I had started a similar company in the same industry as a side hustle. The truth is I wanted the side hustle to become my full-time gig. Even though I made above average income in the corporate arena, I knew with the right sweat equity I could grow my income 10x and more within a few short years.

I felt terrible. Brian looked at me almost with sorrow. And for some reason I felt sorry for him because it seemed he would never know what I knew or feel what I truly felt; which is that true freedom is living in your purpose on your own terms. I wasn’t born in a box nor did I intend to live in one. I had clarity. I knew my truth. So I decided to quit.

The next business day, I came back to the office with 3 letters of resignation. One for John (manager), one for Brian (Sales Director) and one for HR. I had resolve. My mind was so made up I didn’t even want the compensation that would be paid to me while suspended. Save your time, I thought. I made it easy for the powers that be. I’m out!

I briefly spoke to Linda, the receptionist up front who always knew everyone’s business and was a good friend. I told her what I was doing and she was nothing short of shocked. But three years later, she was so happy to see a featured article about my company in a major news publication telling our story of nearly 1M in revenue, a national presence and a thriving disruptive brand.

Most of my colleagues back then thought I was crazy for leaving such a plush job. Close friends thought I had screwed up, again. My parents just shook their head and probably thought ‘here we go again.. This bright child of mine can’t keep a job.’ My girlfriend at the time even told me just when I was taking a step forward, this situation forced me 2 steps back. She eventually came around though. But not because of what I said; only because of what I did.

I kept telling myself it’s better to show people why you did what you did rather then tell them. And so the next 3 years consisted of me putting in the work. Working 9 days per week, 30 hours per day. Putting the sweat equity in. Making no excuses. So what I’m tired! Get to work. So what I have a headache! Make it happen.. You’re hungry? And? I had a legacy to build, people to prove wrong and a company to build that would impact change. I had full custody of my then five-year old son. I had absolutely everything to lose.

Some days I would make over 100 calls to potential clients and partners trying to set up meetings. I would go to every networking event I heard about and meet potential referral partners. I would be so exhausted some days, I would literally faint on my couch only to wake up an hour later thinking ‘I need to make some calls!’ But I knew I had to win.  I knew if I wanted the results I knew were possible, I had to be unreasonable. And I haven’t stopped being unreasonable since.

Now with a network of nearly 200 referral partners, multiple team members and over 1000 business clients from California to Florida (and everywhere in between) we earn residuals on monthly, Mitech Partners is making an impact not only in our industry but in the psychological makeup for change. The psychology for being unreasonable.
